Familiengeschichte
|
Note: Albert Kuchenbecker and Margarethe Abraham married 12/5/1889 in Germany. Albert did farm labor work for a large landowner in far N.E. Germany in the state of Pomerania near the city of Neustettin near the Baltic Sea. ... However, Germany lost this territory to Poland after WWII. Neustettin is now called Szczecinek. The land was very sandy and not good for farm crops, except for potatoes which were grown in abundance and was the main food staple. There was no opportunity to own or buy land. It was all controlled by wealthy families who leased it to the peasants as tenant farmers. Since living conditions were so poor and opportunities to make much of a living negligible, Albert and Margarethe immigrated to the US on their honeymoon in 1889. They sailed from either Hamburg or Bremen and were accompanied in the voyage by Alberts parents, Carl and Charlotte. Also with them were Alberts siblings, Herman, Anna and Tillie. They landed in New York, and then took a train to Appleton, WI, arriving about 12/26/1889. They lived with relatives of Alberts mother, Charlotte (the Reinke family) in Appleton for awhile. Albert then saved and borrowed enough money to buy the family farm of 30 acres just west of Neenah for $300 on Jan 7, 1891. Ten more acres were added to the farm from an adjoining plot in 1931. On the farm, Albert and Margarethe raised a family of 13 children, born over a period of 15 years, plus 2 nieces, Hildegarde and Margaret who arrived from Germany in 1923. The 2 nieces were daughters of Margarethes other sister, Bertha, who eventually immigrated to Neenah. Alberts youngest son, Alfred, and his wife Gertrude bought the farm in 1946. Although Alfred died in 1985, Gertrude and her son Douglas continued to live on the land. (freigegeben von Susan Ginnow) |
